Earth Day, observed each year on April 22, is the day to appreciate our planet and take care of it. On this day, people worldwide appreciate the natural resources available to us and raise awareness of the need to protect them for our future generations.

We should aim to make every day an Earth Day, where we protect our planet daily by either planting a tree, reducing the usage of single-use plastic or not littering our surroundings. In this article, we will throw light on some of the most interesting facts about Earth Day everyone must know-

This is the 52nd Earth Day!

This year, we are celebrating the 52nd Earth Day. It was first observed on April 22, 1970. Gradually, people started becoming more conscious of pollution and they were eager to take strong steps to stop this environmental degradation. Later, US Senator Gaylord Nelson started spreading awareness about protecting the environment on college campuses. This eventually spiraled into International Earth Day.

It was the year 1990 when Earth Day was observed globally. In the 20th year from when Earth Day was introduced, the organizers of the movement planned to take it global were nearly 200 million people across 141 countries participated. It was in fact that day that triggered multiple recycling initiatives and made way for the 1992 UN Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.

Earth Day’s official website says, “for Earth Day 2022, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.”

Yes, you heard that right! The song goes by the name “Earth Anthem” and was written by Indian poet Abhay Kumar in the year 2013. Since then, the song has been recorded in all the official UN languages.
